Wine And Soul Pintas Character Douro 2021 750ml
Description
The 2021 vintage of Pintas Character continues Wine & Soul’s exploration of the Douro’s potential for creating wines of both power and poetry. This latest release shows the evolution of their style toward even greater precision and terroir expression, demonstrating why Jorge Serôdio Borges and Sandra Tavares da Silva are considered among Portugal’s most talented winemakers.
The 2021 growing season in the Pinhão Valley was marked by moderate conditions that naturally controlled yields and preserved freshness. Working with their network of old-vine growers who share their philosophy of minimal intervention, this vintage captures the essence of traditional Douro viticulture interpreted through a contemporary lens. The field blends include dozens of varieties, creating complexity impossible to replicate.
This 2021 Pintas opens with a vibrant nose that shows both concentration and lift. Fresh black and red fruit aromas are interwoven with the floral notes that mark great Douro wines – violets, rockrose, and wild herbs. There’s impressive definition to the aromatics, with each element clearly expressed yet harmoniously integrated. The mineral character is more pronounced in this vintage, adding an extra dimension of complexity.
On the palate, the 2021 reveals Wine & Soul’s evolution toward even greater finesse. While maintaining the concentration expected from old vines, there’s a lightness of touch that makes the wine almost dance across the palate. Silky tannins provide structure without weight, while bright acidity creates energy and drive. Flavors of dark berries, herbs, and minerals create layers that unfold gradually. The finish is long and lifted.
What makes this vintage special is its perfect expression of Wine & Soul’s philosophy – capturing wildness with refinement, power with elegance. The 2021 shows how great sites farmed with respect and vinified with minimal intervention can produce wines of both authenticity and sophistication. This is modern Douro at its most compelling.
While approachable now due to its balance, this wine will reward patience over the next 15+ years. Perfect with grilled meats, game, or enjoyed on its own. For those following the evolution of modern Portuguese wine, the 2021 Pintas Character offers an essential taste of where the Douro is heading.
